The International English Linguistic communication Testing System (IELTS ),[half dozen] is an international standardized examination of English linguistic communication proficiency for non-native English linguistic communication speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Cess English,[six] and was established in 1989. IELTS is ane of the major English-language tests in the world.

IELTS is accepted by well-nigh Australian, British, Canadian, European, Irish gaelic and New Zealand academic institutions, past over iii,000 academic institutions in the United states, and past various professional organisations beyond the world.

IELTS is the only Secure English language Test approved past United kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for visa customers applying both outside and within the UK. It also meets requirements for immigration to Australia, where Examination of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Pearson Test of English Bookish are also accepted,[vii] and New Zealand. In Canada, IELTS, TEF, or CELPIP are accustomed by the immigration authority.[eight]

No minimum score is required to pass the exam. An IELTS result or Examination Written report Form is issued to all examination takers with a score from "band ane" ("not-user") to "band 9" ("expert user") and each institution sets a different threshold. In that location is too a "band 0" score for those who did not attempt the test. Institutions are advised not to consider a report older than two years to be valid, unless the user proves that they have worked to maintain their level.[9] [10]

In 2017, over iii million tests were taken in more 140 countries, up from two million tests in 2012, 1.7 million tests in 2011 and 1.4 million tests in 2009. In 2007, IELTS administered more than i million tests in a single 12-calendar month menses for the get-go time e'er, making it the world's nearly popular English language test for college teaching and clearing.[3]

History [edit]

The English Language Testing Service (IELTS), as IELTS was then known, was launched in 1980 past Cambridge English language Cess (and then known as UCLES) and the British Council. Information technology had an innovative format, which reflected changes in linguistic communication learning and teaching, including the growth in 'chatty' language learning and 'English for specific purposes'. Test tasks were intended to reverberate the use of English language in the 'real globe'.

During the 1980s, examination taker numbers were low (iv,000 in 1981 rising to ten,000 in 1985) and there were practical difficulties administering the test. As a issue, the IELTS Revision Projection was set up to oversee the redesign of the test. In order to have international participation in the redesign, the International Evolution Program of Australian Universities and Colleges (IDP), at present known as IDP: IELTS Australia, joined Cambridge English language Linguistic communication Cess and the British Council to form the international IELTS partnership which delivers the examination to this mean solar day. This international partnership was reflected in the new name for the test: The International English Linguistic communication Testing System (IELTS).

IELTS went live in 1989. Test takers took two non-specialised modules, Listening and Speaking, and ii specialised modules, Reading and Writing. Test taker numbers rose by approximately fifteen% per year and by 1995 in that location were 43,000 test takers in 210 exam centres around the world.

IELTS was revised again in 1995, with iii main changes:

  • In that location was Ane Academic Reading Module and 1 Bookish Writing Module (previously there had been a choice of iii field-specific Reading and Writing modules)
  • The thematic link between the Reading and Writing tasks was removed to avoid confusing the assessment of reading and writing ability
  • The General Preparation Reading and Writing modules were brought into line with the Academic Reading and Writing modules (same timing, length of responses, reporting of scores).

Further revisions went live in 2001 (revised Speaking Test) and 2005 (new assessment criteria for the Writing examination).[11]

IELTS characteristics [edit]

IELTS Bookish and IELTS Full general Training are designed to cover the full range of abilities from non-user to proficient user. The Bookish version is for test takers who want to study at the tertiary level in an English-speaking country or seek professional person registration. The General Training version is for test takers who want to work, railroad train, study at a secondary schoolhouse or migrate to an English-speaking country.[12]

The difference between the Bookish and General Preparation versions is the content, context, and purpose of the tasks. All other features, such as timing resource allotment, length of written responses, and reporting of scores, are the same.[thirteen]

IELTS Academic and General Preparation both incorporate the following features:

  • IELTS tests the ability to heed, read, write and speak in English language.

The speaking session is besides recorded for monitoring and for re-marking in case of an appeal confronting the score given
  • A variety of accents and writing styles take been presented in examination materials in social club to minimize linguistic bias. The accents in the listening department are generally 80% British, Australian, New Zealander and 20% others (mostly American).
  • IELTS is adult by experts at Cambridge English Language Assessment with input from item writers from around the world. Teams are located in the US, UK, Commonwealth of australia, New Zealand, Canada, and other English-speaking nations.
  • Band scores are used for each language sub-skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). The Band Calibration ranges from 0 ("Did non attempt the test") to nine ("Expert User").
